Systems in Focus
Construct Definition
The notion of a system-in-focus stem from systems theory, and suggest that the integrative qualities of the natural world, are really a number of systems and sub-systems. This being from the quantum world (sub-atomic systems made of electrons protons, etc), to the galactic systems (star clusters, milky way).
All of these systems enjoy a strong sense of interconnectedness giving rise to emergent qualities. Consequently, the system-in-focus thus references the primary system being reviewed or studied (e.g., an organ, a body, a group of people, an activity, a project, an organisation, a country, a planet, a galaxy, etc).
Business Implication
The organisational relevance, relates to the integration and interrelatedness of the systems that comprise it (marketing, engineering, finance, etc). Since complex systems are systems, within systems, the construct ensures that we know which of these systems is the primary systems under review, from a business viewpoint, this could imply either the entire business, the value chain, a department, etc.
